SHAH ALAM, May 14 — Residents of high-rise apartments and flats in Selangor should switch to individual water meters to enjoy the free 20 cubic metres of water which will be given away by the state government, beginning June 1.

In view of this, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has asked the residents to meet up with Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS), together with their respective residential management, to discuss the matter.
“There are no problems regarding the free water, but there are several flats and apartments which have yet to replace the bulk meter to an individual unit.

“I would like to remind the public that free water is given to a household based on the individual meter,” he told reporters after chairing the Selangor State Exco weekly meeting here Wednesday.

Khalid said the cost of replacing the meter should be borne by the residential unit owner.

So far, between 200,000 to 300,000 high-rise residential units use the bulk meter.

Beginning June 1, about 1.5 million consumers in Selangor who use individual water meters will receive 20 cubic metres of water for free, as promised by the Opposition coalition in their manifesto during the March 8 general election.
