“If only the Minister had understood that the role of the Vice Chancellors is not to create more and more followers of ideologies and become better and better intelligentsia, but to challenge academicians to challenge themselves in challenging the very foundation of what they profess,

If only the Minister had appointed Vice Chancellors that are true educational philosophers who will become guides by the sides and not true blue political animals who speak loudly and carry around the long stick provided by the State,…..”

There is more to Malaysian higher education than the definition offered by the Minister of Higher Education.

If only we can understand its meaning as “…drawing out the potentials from within” so that the human selfs can become geniuses able to mediate, the contradictions of our hypermodern society.

If only the Minister had understood that education is not about creating ideologically-driven universities but philosophically-foundationed academies of studies and in-depth-inquiries fashioned after great medieval universities.

If only the Minister had understood that the role of the Vice Chancellors is not to create more and more followers of ideologies and become better and better intelligentsia, but to challenge academicians to challenge themselves in challenging the very foundation of what they profess,

If only the Minister had appointed Vice Chancellors that are true educational philosophers who will become guides by the sides and not true blue political animals who speak loudly and carry around the long stick provided by the State,

If only the Minister had not silenced radical professors who speak the truth, but allowed all voices of dissent to be equally heard and celebrate the radically different opinions yet, curb extremism along the way,

If only the Minister is projecting himself as a transformative leader and not a transparent follower of shackling ideology, we would have not have generation of lecturers, students, and civil servants who are known as one of the most obedient in the modern world.

This is the nature of hegemony we have created in the last few decades, through the combination of tradition and total quality control of ideological management.

The word amuk has been replaced by “amuse”; in that we have been given too much bread and circuses in this new matrix of neo-colonialism. We no longer have “academicians who would run amuck” destroying old regimes of truths and out-dated theories and those who pursue truth outside of the iron cage of irresponsible scholarship and bodies of arrogant knowledge.

We no longer have Hang Jebats in academia, but rather Hang Tuahs in chauffeured Mercedes Benz blindly following the commands of the quasi-divine rights of political dynasties.

We have academicians who are happy being amused by daily bread and circuses given by those who own the means of manipulating ideologies in academia. Read more

  1. Dr.Azly, Malaysia is where you belong. You have great ideals. The nation needs you more than United Kingdom or USA. The real challenge is to practise your idealism against the Malaysian scenario. Now that PR has a state university under its administration, you should consider seriously to offer your service and help create global campuses in the Malaysian universities.
